6 Bothersome Signs of a Hormone Imbalance

6 Bothersome Signs of a Hormone Imbalance

Hormones regulate many of your body’s systems and processes. From growth and metabolism to mood, digestion, and reproductive health, these chemical messengers dictate how your body functions.

When your hormones are out of balance, your body tells you.

Dr. Naima Cheema, Dr. Hina Abid, and our Nexclin Medicine team can help you recognize the signs of haywire hormones and restore your body and life balance.

Here are six common signs indicating you need to have your hormones checked.

1. Persistent fatigue

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 13.5% of adults report feeling fatigued regularly. One primary cause is a disruption in hormone levels.

If you’re constantly feeling drained despite getting a full night’s rest, it could be a sign of a hormone imbalance. Hormones like cortisol, thyroid hormones, and insulin regulate your energy levels, so you may feel tired or exhausted when these hormones are out of whack.

2. Unexplained weight gain or loss

The United States has an obesity problem: nearly 31% of adults are overweight, and over 42% are obese. Only 1.6% are underweight, but it still poses a health problem. Weight management issues, including sudden gain or loss, often point to hormone problems.

Unexpected weight changes can be frustrating, especially when you’re eating right and staying active. Because thyroid hormones, insulin, and leptin control your metabolism and appetite, an imbalance can make weight management frustrating and seemingly impossible.

3. Mood swings and anxiety

There’s a reason 90% of women experience premenstrual syndrome (PMS), most teenagers ride an emotional rollercoaster, and some postpartum moms get the baby blues — hormones.

Frequent mood swings, anxiety, and even depression can be symptoms of hormone imbalances. Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone regulate your moods, so fluctuations can lead to irritability, aggression, recklessness, and emotional instability.

4. Irregular menstrual cycles

For women, irregular periods usually indicate that something might be off with their hormones. Beyond the predictable monthly ebb and flow of hormones, some women experience health issues like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) that keep their hormones perpetually off balance.

This condition affects 7-10% of women during their childbearing years — that’s 5-6 million women. It occurs when the female body has too many male hormones (androgens), causing facial hair growth, scalp hair thinning, acne, and fertility problems.

5. Sleep disturbances

If you’re one of the 30% of Americans who can’t sleep at night, it’s time to look for a hormonal connection. Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep often has to do with imbalances in melatonin, cortisol, and other hormones.

Don’t ignore sleeplessness — quality sleep is essential for your overall health, and disrupted sleep can exacerbate hormonal issues, triggering a never-ending cycle.

6. Skin and hair changes

More than 25% of women and 12% of men suddenly get acne in their 40s. Why? Hormones.

Pimples aren’t the only problem; imbalanced hormones also lead to dry skin, thinning hair, or excessive hair growth.

For example, high levels of androgens can lead to increased oil production in the skin, causing acne, and as we mentioned, women with PCOS often have elevated androgen levels, leading to acne and hair growth.
